DECEMBER 2

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

I recall learning how to read. It was before the advent of phonics where you are taught letter sounds, blends, the ‘silent e’, split digraphs and all of these useful and modern methods.

My dad taught me. He just read to me, paused on words and explained to me the ones he felt were important. I was hooked from an early age and used to pretend I was reading the newspapers alongside him, even though I couldn’t yet decode the symbols my eyes were seeing. Then one day, I was four, I read my first word – moon. I was in my parents bedroom by the wall robe and the words kind of skipped off the page into my brain. I was so excited I ran over to my dad and stuttered, “I can read, I can read!” My parents smiled before my dad took a pen and paper and changed the first and last letters to a ‘c’ and ‘l’ respectively. ‘Try that son. I nervously took the paper and my eyes raced across the new word. A moment later I offered, “cool?” My mum laughed, I giggled, my dad smiled –I had cracked it.

Dr. Seuss, famous American author of ‘The Gringe’ once wrote,

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.”

I am fortunate to have an education because I am one of the 2% of literate people in the world who can read. Because you are accessing this so are you. Spend some time today reading the most important literature in the world – the bible.

Our music today, is one of my youngest daughters favourite songs, “Read your bible pray everyday”. Click on the picture to enjoy.

     Housekeeping details for you

The point of this short blog will become clear if you decide to use this reading in the way we intend it. Netherfield Seventh-day Adventist Church believes in healthy churches. You can see what that means if you head to the relevant Healthy Churches page of the website. We also want other churches to be healthy. That means you can join in our campaign to create healthy churches, with healthy people serving the people in those churches.

A healthy church is one where Jesus comes first. A healthy church is one where the people work together to put Jesus first. One thing we are doing is to join people together to spread that news. I would like you to look at our prayer partners page. This will explain how we want you to use this short devotional. Very basically we want you to find a like-minded Christian friend who you will join with to : choose to pray together every day, decide together on a way to serve other people together, to help them grow as Christians - and to invite the Holy Spirit into your life every day. This blog that you will receive every day simply gives a common spiritual purpose. If you are a newcomer and want to join the blog with this object in mind click here
